For fitness enthusiasts, pool depth plays a crucial role in achieving an effective workout.
Optimal depths for different activities:
Lap swimming: 1.2 to 1.5 metres consistent depth
Water aerobics: 1.2 to 1.4 metres
Pool volleyball/basketball: 1.2 to 1.4 metres
Swimming lessons: 1 to 1.2 metres
Sport Pool
Uniform depth: 1.2 to 1.5 metres
Ideal for: fitness, games, family use
Lower maintenance costs
Recreation Pool
Gradual slope: 1 to 1.5 metres
Perfect for: mixed-age families
Versatile functionality
Diving Pool
Deep end: minimum 2 metres
Shallow end: 1 to 1.2 metres
Requires larger space
Beach Entry
Starts at ground level
Gradual slope to desired depth
Excellent accessibility
Every family has unique needs and preferences, which is why there's no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to pool depth.
Modern residential pools typically include these depth ranges:
Shallow end: 1 metre to 1.2 metres
Deep end: 1.5 to 2.4 metres
Diving pools: Minimum 2.4 metres required
Note: Very deep pools (over 2.4 metres) are becoming less common due to:
Higher maintenance costs
Increased safety concerns
Limited functionality for general use
Our custom pool builders Bundaberg team recommends considering how you'll primarily use your pool before deciding on depth variations.
Family Recreation
Creating a family-friendly pool environment starts with thoughtful depth planning.
For families with young children, a generous shallow area is a necessity but teens may like more deep water.
Recommended depths for different age groups:
Toddlers and young children: 0.6 to 0.9 metres
Older children and teens: 1.2 to 1.5 metres
Adults: 1.2 to 1.8 metres
Family-friendly features:
Wide steps for easy entry
Extended shallow areas for play
Gradual depth transitions
Australian pool safety regulations mandate specific requirements for diving depths, with a minimum of 2 metres necessary for any diving activities according to the RSL.
Clear depth markers and appropriate signage must be visible around the pool perimeter to comply with safety standards.
Professional custom pool builders in Bundaberg can ensure your pool meets all necessary safety requirements while maintaining insurance compliance and incorporating essential child safety features.
Legal requirements:
Non-slip surfaces on steps and floor
Compliant pool fencing
Important safety features:
Clear depth change markers
Adequate lighting
Safety ledges where appropriate
Non-slip coping
Design Factors That Impact Depth Decisions
Your property's characteristics significantly influence pool depth options.
Block size, council setback requirements, and existing utilities all play crucial roles in determining feasible depth configurations.
Deeper pools generally require more water, leading to higher ongoing maintenance and heating costs, while shallower pools often prove more energy-efficient and economical to maintain.
Popular Depth Configurations
Today's most sought-after designs include sport pools with uniform depths of 1.2 to 1.5 metres, perfect for active families.
Recreation pools featuring gradual slopes from 1 metre to 1.5 metres offer excellent versatility for mixed-use purposes.
Beach entry designs, starting at ground level and gradually deepening, provide a luxurious resort feel and enhanced accessibility.
Making Your Final Decision
Before finalising your pool depth decisions, consider how your family's needs might evolve over time.
Think about factors like children growing older, potential mobility changes, and the types of activities you'll want to enjoy in your pool.

Pool size long enough for training.
I’m a long distance runner that uses swimming as cross training and looking to start on triathlons soon.
No swimming pools available in my area at all, it’s been a nightmare to keep swimming as an option.
Will build a home pool regardless.
Is this size enough or should I push for a longer (80-82ft) but much more expensive choice?

When thinking about pool depth, a key consideration is whether you want to be able to dive from one end. If so, the pool should be 2.0 m deep. Many modern lap pools are 1.2m throughout. This depth allows for a swimmer to turn, while also being more affordable to maintain and build due to less water and material volume. Essentially, think about how many swimmers will use the pool once, how many strokes you want per lap, and whether diving is important for your routine.

Exercising in water that is too shallow can cause increased impact on your joints, while exercising in water that is too deep makes it difficult to perform the moves with good form and alignment.
The proper depth for shallow water exercise would be anywhere from belly button to chest.
However, aiming for water at breastbone depth is probably best.
Exercising at chest depth is recommended.
However, it is important to note that you are still bearing about 25-35% impact on your joints.
Exercising in water that is waist depth would be 50% impact
Exercising in water that is chest depth would be 25-35% impact
Exercising in water that is neck depth would be 0-10% impact.
The nearly zero impact at neck depth sounds appealing, but the problem is that you would be too buoyant and would not be able to keep up with the workout or perform the exercises with proper form and alignment.

Thinking of swimming lengths for exercise? You’ll want the pool depth to be at least 4 feet to avoid injury to hands and feet while carrying out your preferred stroke style.
If simply jumping into the pool is something you can see yourself, your friends, or even the kids doing, then you want to have a pool depth of at least 4 feet.
This is so there is enough water to absorb the impact of your jump.
Diving can be a dangerous thing due to the risk of head injuries, but if you’re dreaming of diving into your pool, you’ll need to have a pool depth of about 9 feet to accommodate this.
